Frequently Asked Questions — Electrical Components

What is the difference between MCB, MCCB and RCCB?

An MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) protects circuits against overload and short circuit, typically up to 100A — the standard protection device in residential and light commercial distribution boards.

An MCCB (Moulded Case Circuit Breaker) does the same job but for higher current ratings, often with adjustable trip settings, used in commercial and industrial main switchboards and larger sub-circuits.

An RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) works differently — it protects against earth leakage and electric shock risk, but does not protect against overload or short circuit on its own.

Most installations need both overload protection (MCB or MCCB) and earth leakage protection (RCCB) working together.

What should I check before buying a contactor?

Three things matter most when selecting a contactor:

  1. Number of poles — 1P or 2P for single-phase loads, 3P or 4P for three-phase loads. This must match your circuit configuration.
  2. Coil voltage — the voltage needed to energise the contactor's coil (commonly 220–240V AC or 24V DC). This is the control voltage, not the load voltage, and must match your control circuit.
  3. Current (ampere) rating — the contactor's rated current must match or exceed your motor or load's full load current, including starting current for motor applications.

WhatsApp us with your motor or load details and we'll confirm the correct contactor specification.

What is an RCCB Auto-Reclosing Device, and do I need one?

An RCCB Auto-Reclosing Device (ARD) automatically attempts to restore power after an RCCB trips due to earth leakage — instead of requiring someone to manually reset it on site. This is particularly useful for unmanned or remote installations, such as pump houses, cold storage units, telecom stations, or aquaculture farms, where leaving power off for an extended period causes real loss.

For safety, the device typically limits reclosing attempts and locks out if the fault persists, preventing repeated re-energising of a genuine fault. WhatsApp us if you'd like this paired with your RCCB installation.

Do I need a Surge Protection Device (SPD) in Malaysia?

Malaysia has one of the highest lightning strike frequencies in the world, making surge protection a genuinely important — not optional — consideration for both homes and businesses. An SPD protects your electrical installation and connected equipment from voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes or utility switching, which can otherwise damage sensitive electronics, appliances, and control panels. SPDs are typically classified by type:

  • Type 1 — installed at the main incoming supply, protects against direct or nearby lightning strikes.
  • Type 2 — installed at the distribution board, protects against indirect surges and switching transients — the most common type for residential and commercial installations.
  • Type 3 — installed near sensitive equipment for additional point-of-use protection.

WhatsApp us with your property type and equipment sensitivity and we'll recommend the right SPD configuration.

What should I know before buying a time switch?

A time switch automatically turns a circuit on and off at pre-set times — commonly used for outdoor lighting, signage, water pumps, and irrigation systems. Before buying, consider:

  • Programme type — daily (same schedule every day) or weekly (different schedules per day, useful if weekday and weekend timing differ).
  • Number of switching operations per day — most standard time switches support multiple on/off cycles within 24 hours.
  • Backup/reserve power — check if the model retains its programmed schedule during a power outage, so it doesn't need reprogramming after every trip.
  • Load rating — confirm the switch's current rating matches what it's controlling (e.g. lighting circuit vs pump motor).

WhatsApp us with your application and we'll recommend the right model.

What should I know before buying a KWh meter?

A KWh (kilowatt-hour) meter measures electricity consumption — commonly used for sub-metering tenants, monitoring specific equipment or circuits, or tracking usage separately from your main TNB meter. Before buying, consider:

  • Single phase or three phase — must match your circuit's supply configuration.
  • Direct connected or CT (current transformer) operated — direct connected meters suit lower current circuits; CT-operated meters are used for higher current industrial or commercial loads.
  • Digital or analogue display — digital meters are more common now and often easier to read accurately.
  • Accuracy class — relevant if the reading will be used for billing purposes, such as sub-metering tenants.

WhatsApp us with your application — sub-metering, equipment monitoring, or general usage tracking — and we'll confirm the right meter type.
